A Discourse of Fish and Fish-Ponds done by ‘a person of honour’, published in 1714

“A Discourse of Fish and Fish-Ponds” was authored by Roger North (“a person of honour”) and published in London.

On the copy of the frontispiece (World of Water Library) it reads:

“LONDON. Printed for E. Cuell, at the Dial and Bible againft St. Dunftan’s Church in Fleet-Street. 1714. Price 1s, 6d. flitcht, 2s, or 2s, 6d, bound.”

This book was a very important work that contributed to the development of fish culture in 18th century Britain and Northern Europe. It focused on carp farming with detailed information on pond construction and management. This made it a valuable resource for landowners and fish culturists of the time as many estates were constructing ornamental lakes in their landscapes, eg. Picton Castle, Wales.
