School Talkabout on: FOODS / How are we going to Feed the World?

Do you eat natural vegetables and fruit or processed fruit and veg?
Do you buy natural meat and fish or processed meat and fish?

EAT SAFELY –  STAY HEALTHY

The more humans we breed, the more stomachs we need to feed, the more farm land we need to create, the less habitats for wildlife, the more industrialised and controlled farming.

What’s to be done in the long term?

We could limit child birth or move to a bigger planet.

What can we do in the immediate short term whilst we think about the long term?

We can try and slow population growth – but that’s not going to go down well with those who want to breed big families.  We can stop wasting the food we grow. We can limit our eating to the amount of food our bodies actually need – but that’s not going to make gluttons happy.

We can increase the size and efficiency of our farms – but that leads to even more  industrialised farming and more fertilizer production and antibiotic use.

We can start to eat different wild caught foods that at the moment escape our dinner plates – but that may put a few more species on the endangered list.

Do you think we could develop a more efficient human digestive system?

Become a Food Technologist.

It’s very likely that most of us will continue to buy and eat farmed food. We might pick a wild blackberry or go on a fungus foraging course but so long as money-earning keeps us busy, we are not all going to start farming food full time.

Soylent Green? Don’t even think about it! But DO THINK about green solutions to growing our future protein requirements – maybe Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis and A. maxima)  or the red, brown and orange solutions from other algae species

During a WoW School Talkabout we discuss food and feeding the World, in the hope of encouraging more hungry students to make a career in sustainable food production.
