How Water Vapour Helps Form Desert Roses

Desert roses are unusual crystal forms that can look like a rose sometimes. Though they form in sandy, dry places and are made of minerals like gypsum or baryte, they can’t form without water.

The Science Behind Desert Roses

Desert roses start forming underground, where there’s water mixed with minerals. This water isn’t like the water you drink-it has minerals dissolved in it, especially gypsum. The sand in deserts often covers this mineral-rich water.

When the weather is hot and dry, the water slowly moves up through the sand. As it gets closer to the surface, the heat causes the water to evaporate, turning it into water vapour that escapes into the air. When the water leaves, the minerals are left behind in the sand.

As more and more water evaporates, the minerals begin to stick together and form crystals. Over time, these crystals grow in patterns that look like rose petals.
