He’d been sea fishing, visited fishing weirs, seen putcher fishers at work and was conducting research into farming algae, oysters, clam, salmon, trout and carp.

At that time, it looked like freshwater fish might have a sporting chance of escaping some of the problems faced by marine species, but not for long.  Stocks were already being attacked by industrial and domestic mis-use of freshwaters, so whatever water habitat was ‘home’ it was never going to be a safe haven for aquatic family life again.

“What do we want the future to be?”

It could be a mix of Global Fisheries Management, Aquaponics with a touch of World-diet changes.  Or in the long term, we may reach peak people population and peak food production. When that hits us, we may have little choice other than to move to some other blue planet but whilst we keep studying terraforming this planet needs to be kept in good health, along with all of life’s requirements, for us to stand any chance of replicating any new home.

We may have five billion years of Sun life left but we may need all that time to work out how to terraform with any assured success, so whilst we’re learning we must keep this blue planet ‘home SWEET home’ and not trash it.

Our generation needs to look to the future, urgently.
