WOW’s Guide to Protecting Water

Think Before You Pour to Keep Water Pure! –  A Friendly Guide to Protecting Water

Water is amazing. It keeps us alive, cleans our world, and supports entire ecosystems. But just because water dissolves a lot of things, it doesn’t mean we should treat it like a magic bin for waste!

Here’s our no-nonsense guide for everyone, from kids to adults & from homeowners to businesses, on what should NEVER go down your sinks, drains, toilets, or into rivers, the ocean or groundwater.

🚽 Toilets Are Not Trash Cans!

Flushing the wrong things can clog pipes, pollute waterways, and harm wildlife. Only the “Three Ps” should go down the toilet: Pee, Poo, and (toilet) Paper. That’s it!

🚫 NEVER FLUSH:
❌ Wet wipes (even “flushable” ones don’t break down fast enough!)
❌ Sanitary products (pads, tampons, nappies) are designed to absorb water, not dissolve in it!
❌ Cotton buds & dental floss (tiny but mighty pipe blockers!)
❌ Medicines & chemicals can end up in your drinking water and harm waterlife.

🚰 Sinks & Drains: Not a Liquid Landfill!

Just because something is a liquid doesn’t mean it’s safe to pour down the drain. Many substances don’t dissolve in water and cause pollution or blockages.

🚫 NEVER POUR:
Oils & fats (butter, cooking oil, bacon grease when cool, harden, and clog pipes!)
Paints, varnishes & solvents (they contain chemicals that pollute rivers and harm waterlife)
Pesticides & weed killers  are purpose-designed to kill (enough said).
Petrol, diesel, or motor oil (even tiny amounts are toxic to waterlife)

💡 DO THIS INSTEAD:
✅ Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel and bin it
✅ Take chemicals, paints, and oils to a hazardous waste centre

🏞️ Rivers, Seas, and Drains: Not Dumping Grounds!

Everything that goes into rainwater drains (like the ones on roadsides) flows untreated into rivers, lakes, and the sea. So, DO NOT dump waste into road-drains.

🚫 NEVER THROW IN OR POUR:
❌ Rubbish (plastic bags, wrappers, cigarette butts as they all end up in the ocean)
❌ Old medicines (as they don’t just “disappear” – they pollute water and harm waterlife)
❌ DIY waste (cement, plaster, paint because these can turn rivers and seas toxic)
❌ Car fluids (brake fluid, antifreeze, motor oil are deadly to waterlife)

💡 DO THIS INSTEAD:
✅ Dispose of litter properly (recycle it)
✅ Take car fluids and hazardous waste to proper collection sites
✅ Use biodegradable or eco-friendly cleaners

🚗 Car Owners & Landfill Sites: Water Needs You Too!

Cars leak oil, tyres shed microplastics, and landfills leach chemicals into groundwater. Everyone has a part to play in protecting our water.

🚫 BAD HABITS TO AVOID:
❌ Letting oil leaks build up on driveways … because rain washes them into rivers!
❌ Dumping car batteries or tyres as they contain heavy metals.
❌ Throwing electronic waste into general landfill. These are full of toxic materials.

💡 DO THIS INSTEAD:
✅ Regularly check for oil leaks and fix them fast
✅ Recycle car parts and tyres at approved collection centres
✅ Dispose of electronic waste responsibly

🗑️ Bin your waste, like you ‘oughter’ – don’t go dumpin’ it in Water!”

Every action we take affects the health of our rivers, lakes, and oceans. Water is precious, and keeping it clean is everyone’s job.
