“Her y Ponic Sbâr” (The Spare Parts Ponic Challenge – Build, Grow, Discover)

Derbyn y Sialens Ponic

Ydych chi’n barod am y Sialens Junkyard Aquaponic?

(Accept the Ponic Challenge. Are You Up for the Aquaponic Junkyard Challenge?)

Alla i droi cymysgedd o bibau, potiau, tape, a channoedd yn system sy’n tyfu bwyd?

(Could you turn a random mix of pipes, tubs, tape, and buckets into a system that actually grows food?)

That’s the heart of our Aquaponic Junkyard Challenge – an annual WOW event where creativity meets sustainability.

No, you don’t need to be a NASA engineer (though if you are, we’d love to see what you build!). Unlike Apollo 13, no astronauts’ lives are on the line. But here on Earth, we do face a very real challenge: how to grow enough fresh, nourishing food for everyone, using less water and fewer resources.

That’s why we run this challenge. Aquaponics, hydroponics, bioponics, and other “-ponic” systems are practical, sustainable farming methods that could shape the future of food. And with so many people now growing herbs, salad leaves, tomatoes, and strawberries in their backyards, balconies, and kitchens, this is more than a “growing trend”.

So what’s the challenge?
We’ll provide a collection of scrap and surplus materials at our field centre. Your mission is to design and build a working food-growing system – aquaponic, hydroponic, or any other ‘ponic you dream up – using only what’s available.

It’s hands-on. It’s fun. It’s creative. And it makes you think deeply about how we grow, share, and sustain food in a resource-stretched world.

So whether you’re an engineer, a maker, a gardener, a student, or just curious – this challenge is for you.
