From the Money Cowrie to the true cost of Currency
At World of Water (WOW), we’ve seen a significant shift in society’s views on marine life and conservation. Our Victorian Era Collections feature artifacts like shell-encrusted ornaments and “Money Cowrie” (Monetaria moneta) shells, which were once a widely accepted currency in trade networks across Africa and Asia. These shells held economic value and were involved in complex social dynamics, including transactions during the transatlantic slave trade.
Today, however, we face an urgent crisis. Unscrupulous collectors and fishers use destructive methods like blast fishing and cyanide poisoning to harvest marine life. These practices indiscriminately stun or kill fish and other sea creatures, causing catastrophic damage to marine ecosystems.
Entire coral reefs are destroyed, biodiversity is decimated, and long-term environmental harm far outweighs any short-term gains from illegal activities.
Unlike the curio collectors of the past who valued their finds, today’s illegal merchant-hunters strip reefs of valuable specimens on an industrial scale, inflicting irreparable harm on fragile habitats.
This stark contrast highlights the critical need for stringent conservation efforts and global awareness to protect our oceans’ delicate balance while reflecting on the true cost of currency in both historical and modern contexts.”
