Tracing the Marks of Water

A Walk Through the Fluid History of Human Communication

Imagine our next exhibition-in-the-making where every mark humans have ever made glimmers with the presence of water. Across time, water has shaped not only life itself, but the ways we express it – carrying pigment, softening fibres, cooling machines, reflecting light.

Follow its current, and we follow the evolution of human communication.


The First Marks: Cave, Sand, and Smoke

Our journey begins where art and survival shared the same walls.

In the dim glow of early fires, some of our ancestors mixed water with ochre and ash to paint hunting scenes and symbols – messages meant for those who would come after. Pigment would not bind to stone without water; the image existed only because water allowed it to stay.

Outside the caves, marks appeared and vanished just as quickly. Lines scratched into wet sand carried thoughts that lasted only until the next tide. Communication made – and then unmade by water.

Above the firelight, another language rose: smoke signals. Heat turned water into vapour, lifting coded messages into the air. The residue of that steam was charcoal which became one of humanity’s first drawing tools.


Clay, Slate, and Tablets of Memory

The next space carries the muted tones of earth.

Here are clay tablets from ancient Mesopotamia, their wedge-shaped cuneiform pressed into wet clay. Water gave the earth its softness; fire made it endure. Many tablets survived because a library fire accidentally baked them harder – destruction preserving memory.

Nearby sit slate writing tablets, familiar to classrooms much closer to our own time. Chalk marks scraped onto stone and wiped away with a damp cloth. Chalk itself is a gift of ancient water – formed from marine life compressed beneath vanished seas.

Even today’s digital “tablets” echo this lineage. The urge to press, trace, and record remains the same; only the surface has changed.


The Flow of Script: Papyrus, Parchment, and Song

Scrolls unfurl like river currents.

Papyrus sheets, made from reeds cut from Nile shallows, were pressed and dried with water’s help. In medieval scriptoria, parchment was softened, stretched, and written upon with inks suspended in water. Illuminated manuscripts shimmer because water carried both pigment and gold-size into place.

Across the room, musical manuscripts translate sound into marks. Here, water helped fix vibration into visual memory – allowing music to travel centuries beyond the breath that first made it.


Impressions and Replications: Paper, Print, and Engraving

The rhythm of presses begins to dominate.

Handmade paper, lifted wet from pulp vats, dried into sheets ready to receive ink. Letterpress printing depended on careful dampening: too much water and fibres swelled; too little and the impression failed.

Boxwood engraving tools and proofs show the same discipline. The wood had to remain stable, the ink workable, the paper receptive. Each print is evidence of water being carefully held in balance.

Lithographic stones and plates reveal water’s quieter authority. A thin film of moisture protects non-image areas from ink, while drawn lines remain receptive. Here, water acts as gatekeeper – allowing images to multiply only when carefully watched.


Light and Time: Photography and Film

Chemical trays glimmer in the next gallery.

Early photography was as thirsty as painting. Plates were coated, developed, fixed, and washed. Glass slides were cleaned and reused under running taps. Water revealed images … and then carried away what was left behind.

Film brought motion, but not dryness. Its slick ribbons trace another hidden flow: plastics derived from ancient plant matter, grown in water-rich soils long before they became oil. Every moving image carries the memory of vanished rivers.


The Living Stream: Digital Media and Cooling Waters

The noise changes. The presses fall silent. A low hum replaces them.

The digital age depends on water just as surely. Servers are cooled; microchips are washed during manufacture; electricity flows through hydro-powered systems. Even e-ink displays rely on tiny charged particles drifting in liquid suspension – pigment, once again, carried by water.

Our messages have become streams of light, but their physical life still runs wet beneath the surface.


The Next Horizon: Marks Without Pages

In the final space – or perhaps the next one under construction, marks leave the page entirely.

Spatial and immersive media bend light, sound, and movement into shared environments. Yet the materials behind them – glassfibre-optic cables, water cooling systems, energy infrastructures – remain bound to water.

As communication becomes more intangible, its foundations stay stubbornly physical.


The Thread That Connects Every Mark

From cave smoke to cooling towers, from pigment to pixel, the story of communication is a story of water.

Water bound pigment to rock, shaped clay into archives, softened parchment, carried ink, revealed photographs, and now cools the machines that hold our collective memory.

Every mark we make – fleeting or permanent, flows from the same source.

To care for water is to care for our ability to remember, imagine, and connect. The next marks we make with it must ensure that future generations still have a current to follow.
