Establishing the WOW Water Centre:
A Nexus for Water Conservation

As WOW’s International Water Awareness Corpus (IWAC) takes shape, we embark on an exciting journey toward establishing a dedicated Water Centre, affectionately dubbed the “Water Palace” by one of our exhibition visitors in the early ’90s. This centre will serve as a hub for essential research, learning, and water-related activities that promote both fun and conservation.

“Through innovative exhibits, engaging programs, and global outreach, we are laying the groundwork for a future where water conservation is paramount.”

To provide a comprehensive understanding of water use and heritage, we will utilize a geolocation-based app to guide visitors through the centre. (App updates will expand to showcase both exemplary and poor water practices at sites worldwide—from innovative water management systems to historically poor examples like castle garderobes).

🌐  Our Live Outreach Activities

We will introduce this app during live outreach at fairs, festivals, and schools, creating meaningful connections within communities.

Additionally, filming in our Late Night Lounge, exhibitions, events and IWAC’s Studio Kitchen will generate engaging multimedia for our online outreach.

By sharing knowledge both online and in person, WOW aims to cultivate a growing dataset that inspires collective responsibility for good water stewardship across generations.

With an emphasis on immersion, accessibility, and practical applications, the WOW Water Centre will facilitate “conversations” around water’s commercial role. For example:

Our centre will investigate water’s pivotal role in food production. We will explore sustainable irrigation techniques and soil health while unraveling the complexities of water’s influence on soil organisms, aquifers, and in aqua culture. By exploring the impact of water quality on soil health, we aim to provide local farmers with insights into optimizing water usage for sustainable land management.

💦Diverse Perspectives

The WOW Centre will be strategically located to revitalize and enhance its surroundings, drawing inspiration from successful redevelopment projects worldwide. Potential sites could include former industrial areas, brownfields, or locations near significant water users. This approach aligns with notable examples such as:

• The UK’s Eden Project, built in an old china clay quarry
• London’s Millennium Dome area, developed on polluted former gasworks land
• ETH Zurich’s IBM Aquasar system, showcasing energy-efficient liquid cooling for computing
• Kings Cross Central in London, UK: This former industrial site was successfully redeveloped into a mixed-use neighborhood with sustainable design features
• Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen, Germany: Once a coal mining site, now transformed as a cultural and educational centre

By choosing such locations, the WOW Centre aims to contribute to local regeneration while demonstrating innovative water management practices.

The centre will collaborate with fishing communities to promote local seafood through exhibits that highlight responsible fishing practices. We’ll emphasize restocking from farm hatcheries and maintaining species diversity for a sustainable food chain while advocating for balanced approaches to challenges like seabed mining and tidal energy production, balancing the needs of industry and the environment to preserve ecosystems and livelihoods.

We’ll engage in campaigns focused on water pollution awareness and ecosystem protection. The WOW Centre will champion other initiatives aimed at improving water quality and securing habitats vital for aquatic life.
