A recent study published in Nature Physics has revealed that ordinary ice is flexoelectric—a material that generates electricity when mechanically deformed, such as being bent, stretched, or twisted.  This electrifying discovery changes our view of ice—from a passive bystander to a potential power player.

Moreover, at temperatures below -113 °C (160 K), ice exhibits surface ferroelectricity—a reversible electric polarization similar to that seen in advanced electroceramic materials.

This dual electrifying behavior could help explain how lightning forms in thunderstorms: as ice particles collide and flex as they tumble inside storm clouds, they generate charge through flexoelectric effects, potentially sparking the massive electrical discharges we know as lightning.

Beyond the natural world, this opens a realm of innovative possibilities:

  • Harvesting energy from ice in cold climates and remote regions – be they polar on Earth or on other planets.
