Putting the lid down really matters

Think you’re safe in a public loo? Think again. Lidless toilets spray more than water — and we’ve got the science to prove it.
In 2003, a strange and deadly illness called SARS swept through parts of Asia. One of the most alarming outbreaks happened in a Hong Kong apartment block, where over 300 residents were infected — not through coughing or sneezing, but through the building’s toilet and drainage system. Scientists later confirmed that aerosolised droplets from faecal matter had travelled through the pipes and air, spreading the virus between families who never even saw each other.
That incident sparked deeper investigation into how modern toilets behave. What researchers found was quietly unsettling: flushing a lidless toilet releases an invisible cloud of tiny water droplets and microscopic particles — all of which carry some trace of what was just flushed. These droplets don’t just vanish. They can hang in the air, settle on nearby surfaces like a toothbrush, or even be inhaled.
It turns out that one simple, often-overlooked object — the humble toilet lid — plays a key role in stopping this chain reaction. Lids help contain the plume. Without them, especially in public toilets where multiple people pass through in a day, we’re essentially aerosolising shared waste into a communal breathing space.
This isn’t alarmism. It’s what decades of medical research, including NHS and peer-reviewed studies like those published in the Journal of Hospital Infection, have shown us. Yet many public toilets — in cafés, community centres, train stations and schools — are still fitted without lids.
We’re asking for change because it’s small, practical, and overdue. Lids cost less than a tap but they protect far more than your shoes.

Pathogens identified in toilet plume aerosols include viruses such as SARS-CoV-1, SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), norovirus, rotavirus, enteroviruses, adenoviruses, and hepatitis A; bacteria including Clostridioides difficile, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Campylobacter, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis; as well as protozoa like Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium.
