
When you see your breath on a cold day, a process similar to the formation of steam from icecap cracks occurs, but on a much smaller scale. Here’s what happens to create breath-steam:

Warm, moist air: As you exhale, the air leaving your lungs is warm (close to body temperature, about 37°C or 98.6°F) and saturated with water vapour.

Temperature difference: When this warm, moist air meets the cold outside air, it rapidly cools.

Condensation: As the exhaled air cools, it can no longer hold as much water vapor. The excess water vapor condenses into tiny liquid water droplets suspended in the air.

Visible “steam”: These suspended water droplets form a visible mist or “steam” that we see as our breath on a cold day.
The visibility of breath-steam depends on the temperature and humidity of the surrounding air. The colder and drier the outside air, the more visible your breath becomes.
This phenomenon is essentially a miniature version of cloud formation, where water vapor condenses around tiny particles in the air. In the case of breath-steam, the particles can include aerosols from your respiratory tract.
Understanding this process helps explain why breath-steam is more visible on cold days and why it quickly dissipates as it mixes with the surrounding air and the water droplets evaporate back into vapor.
