Water in Art: Imagining a Better Water Future

Water in Art: Imagining a Better Water Future

At World of Water (WOW), we’ve always recognised that truth thrives when expressed in many forms, and that art can carry truths that facts alone cannot.

A polluted river can be measured. A drying landscape can be mapped. Water stress can be reduced to statistics. But art can make us feel what those numbers mean.

Art can make us mourn a river, marvel at a spring, question who controls water, laugh at our own contradictions or imagine a future in which water, people and the wider living world are in better balance.

That is why water and art belong together.

Creativity at the Heart of World of Water

From our earliest days, creativity has been central to the way WOW communicates about water.

Our Art on Tour exhibitions brought the threats facing water and aquatic life into public view, using art to open conversations about pollution and the connections that weave our global environment together.

Our Storytellings brought poetry, puppetry, live painting and performance together, travelling alongside WOW exhibitions to encourage audiences not simply to look, but to care, and ultimately to act.

This was never art for art’s sake. It was art as attention, conversation and connection.

And that journey continues….

Why Art? Why Now?

Water is under growing pressure from pollution, climate change, over-extraction, privatisation and competing demands.

We know that information matters. Evidence matters. Science matters.

But knowing something is wrong does not automatically make us change.

Art can help bridge that gap.

Artists can make the invisible visible. They can give shape to experiences that are difficult to explain, and create emotional connections with places and issues that might otherwise feel distant.

Through painting, photography, sculpture, music, poetry, film, performance, design, digital art, installation and countless other forms, artists can help us:

  • Feel the grief of a drying riverbed.
  • Marvel at the wonder of a hidden spring.
  • Squirm at the discomfort of waste and pollution.
  • Question the systems that determine who gets water and who does not.
  • Laugh or gasp at the absurdity of continuing as though nothing needs to change.
  • And, crucially, imagine something better.

Because we don’t only need to document the water crisis. We need to imagine the water future we want.

From Touring Trunks to New Conversations

That is where Water in Art comes in.

WOW is developing this space as a home for conversations between water and creativity — across disciplines, generations and communities.

We’ll meet artists whose work engages with rivers, oceans, wetlands, rain, drought, pollution and the human relationship with water.

We’ll explore exhibitions and installations. We’ll publish critical essays and conversations. We’ll look at zines, sculptures, puppetry, poetry, music, photography, public art and emerging creative forms.

And we’ll ask bigger questions:

What can art tell us about water that data cannot?

Can creativity change the way we value water?

How might artists help us imagine a world where water and human activity are in better balance?

Our ambition is to become water’s cultural memory and critical voice – remembering what has been lost, challenging what is happening now, and helping to imagine what could come next.

An Invitation to Creative Change-Makers

We don’t believe this conversation belongs only to established artists.

It belongs to anyone who uses creativity to help people see the world differently.

Perhaps you are documenting a river or pond – whether it is thriving, threatened or somewhere in between.

Perhaps you are turning rainfall, tides or river flow into music.

Perhaps you are designing new ways for communities to live with floods.

Perhaps your school is creating a mural about its local waterway.

Perhaps you write poems about the sea, make films about wetlands, create performances about drought, build sculptures from discarded materials, or use digital technology to help people experience water in an entirely new way.

Your medium doesn’t matter as much as your message.

If your creative work can make people notice water, question its treatment, value its living systems, or imagine a better future, we want to hear from you.

So, creatives: what future can you see?

We’re inviting artists, makers, musicians, writers, designers, performers, photographers, filmmakers, educators, students and creative communities everywhere to join this conversation.

Show us what water means to you.

Show us what is at stake.

And, most importantly, show us what a better-balanced water world could look like.

Share your work. Tell us your story. Introduce us to someone whose creativity deserves to be seen.

Together, we can build a richer cultural conversation around water, and one that doesn’t simply ask people to fear what we might lose, but helps them imagine what we could create.

And this is only the beginning.

Water is present in every medium because water is present in every life.

So let’s follow its journey together,  one story, one artwork, one conversation, one action at a time.

To artists: keep speaking up.

To audiences: seek out and support the creators who move you.

To everyone: help us imagine, and make a water future in better balance.
