Our upcoming exhibition, Water in Health & Medicine, will take visitors on a journey from ancient practices to the cutting-edge uses of water in modern healthcare, highlighting the profound relationship between water and our well-being.
The Healing Waters of Antiquity
In ancient times, the belief in the curative powers of natural springs and mineral-rich waters was widespread. The practice of “taking the waters” was considered essential for healing various ailments, a tradition that dates back to ancient civilizations, including the Romans. These baths, often located in scenic spots, were thought to cure everything from skin conditions to digestive problems. For example, the Roman baths in Bath, England, showcase the sophisticated infrastructure developed to harness these natural resources, underscoring water’s historical role in health and medicine.
The Advent of Hygienic Practices
As medical science evolved, water’s role in health became more scientifically grounded.
The discovery that handwashing could prevent infections marked a pivotal moment in medical history. In the 19th century, Ignaz Semmelweis, a Hungarian physician, made the groundbreaking observation that washing hands between operations significantly reduced the incidence of puerperal fever in maternity wards. This simple yet revolutionary practice is a cornerstone of modern medical hygiene practices and illustrates how water can be a life-saving resource in healthcare.
Water in Pharmaceuticals and Modern Medicine
Today, the pharmaceutical industry relies heavily on water – not just in the manufacturing process but also in the formulation of medicines. Purified water is a key ingredient in tablets, syrups, and injectable drugs. The production of these medicines often involves large quantities of water, which must be of the highest purity to avoid contamination.

In less obvious ways, water is integral to health. For instance, the process of digesting food involves biochemical reactions that break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. One of the by-products of these reactions is water. Specifically, during the metabolic process known as cellular respiration, glucose is broken down in the presence of oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water, and energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The chemical reaction can be simplified as follows:
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy (Adenosine triphosphate)
This metabolic water can account for about 10% of the body’s daily water requirements, producing approximately 91.25 liters per person per year. While this may seem like ‘new water,’ the hydrogen and oxygen atoms making up this water have been part of the Earth’s supply for countless years.
Unseen Contaminants and Environmental Impact
However, the water that sustains us can also carry hidden dangers. As we excrete waste, including pharmaceutical residues, these contaminants often find their way into natural water systems. Research has shown that compounds like synthetic hormones from birth control pills are accumulating in rivers and oceans, leading to reproductive issues in wildlife, such as increased infertility rates in fish and amphibians. This cocktail of chemicals poses a growing threat to both ecosystems and human health, underscoring the need for stricter water management and purification processes.
